January 2024: Data collection and preliminary data analysis has now concluded.

Research Outputs (Intended for Public and Policy Audiences)

Many of the outputs below have been produced by Gypsy and Traveller creatives, using data from the oral histories, crime survey and archival material collected for the Realities Checked Study (RCS). We have curated these into an interactive Multimedia Exhibition that can be accessed here or you can view them individually by clicking on the image thumbnails below.

Films

These short films have been produced by Rural Media. They capture the realities of crime and (in)justice experiences for Gypsies and Travellers in England (2021-2023) using oral history data.

Spoken Word Performances

These performances demonstrate the continued oral traditions of Gypsies and Travellers to share stories of culture and other life experiences. They use the project’s oral history data and are performed by Leon Cascalini who says:

I am of Romani, Sinti blood line. I spent the first 20 years of my life on the road living wild in Nature with my community. At the age of 20 I was imprisoned for a serious offence I had committed. 10 years into the prison sentence I met the Artist/lecturer Peter Martin, he taught an Art class in prison. That meeting changed my life...thanks to Peter I was initiated into the world of form, colour and texture…..I discovered a language beyond words….an inner landscape of the imagination.

Art and Culture to me today seems cerebrally isolated, possibly illustrating our loss of meaning, purpose… Soul. Art for me is a process, a journeying, a rite of passage to explore and reconnect my inner landscapes….to the outer landscapes….that is, to re-establish a connection to my inner nature and Mother Nature…..this gives me meaning, nourishment @ sustenance. The object, art piece is the embers left from what you could call the shamanic, healing journey. More than ever before I sense that we collectively need to find and re-establish our Souls to the Soul of Our planet, Our Great mother who has always sustained and nourished us as a human family.

Dos and Donts for Practitioners and Professionals

Here is some simple guidance for those wanting to work respectfully with Gypsy and Traveller community members.

Crime Survey

Below is a Crime Survey Template that organisations can use to collect data on crime victimisation that affects those they represent. It uses questions from the Crime Survey of England and Wales but it has been adapted to be used with Gypsies and Travellers.

Painting

This original oil painting was created while writing spoken word pieces that reflect on life’s journey as a Roma child, man and elder. Produced by Leon Cascalini. © All rights reserved.

Leon Cascalini says: In this painting I journeyed into all that is “Sacred” to my Spirit, from the essence of my Culture…..the siddhi, stories, myths, legends and life experiences which have made me the man I am today.

Photographs

These photos have been taken by Jean Cullen to reflect aspects of Gypsies and Travellers’ lives in England in 2023. Jean Cullen is an Irish photographer living in Cornwall. Her work finds expression through photography and film where she seeks to encapsulate the beauty of our environment and our sense of place within it. As a new traveller, she values the importance of representing marginalised communities and supporting the narrative around issues of discrimination. © All rights reserved.
